You are living in your dream house… almost. The location is desirable, and almost the entire house is the way you want it to be, however the kitchen isn’t up to par because of its size. Smaller kitchens cannot accommodate homework, recipe hunting and the countless activities we complete in a kitchen, so unless you don’t cook in the kitchen at all, your kitchens main chore is meal preparation. Don’t fret, there are many ways to still have that dream house with a tiny kitchen.
First you’ll want to focus on function. If your kitchen functions as it should, you will be much more of a happy camper when in this room. Having the proper appliances and work areas you need will check off functionality. Look into saving space by using scaled down or innovative appliances, or consider a small scale island that can be rolled.
Traditional cabinets in a smaller kitchen can make the room feel more claustrophobic. Trading in the cupboards for open storage will make your kitchen look more spacious and serve as a display space for your favorite dishes. If you not a fan of the open storage cabinets, replacing the cabinet doors with glass is an easy way to visually expand your kitchen. Want to visually expand your kitchen even more without increasing your budget to expand the actual kitchen? Do so with lighting. Having the right combination of task and atmospheric lighting will do the trick.
Having a smaller kitchen means less area, which may sound like a down side at first, but just think of that beautiful marble you were wanting for the flooring. Just imagine the cost of inexpensive flooring for a large kitchen with over 150 sq ft. A smaller kitchen with less than 70 sq ft will allow for higher end and specialty equipment and materials without killing your budget. That is something we never want to do!
