When it comes to natural stone for homeowner’s countertops, granite is a popular choice. It’s hard to believe that this now common material found in many kitchens, used to be found in only the most expensive, high end kitchens. When you walk into your home or in any home and see granite countertops, you get a high quality feeling that can bring a kitchen together. Since these are made from natural stone, there isn’t an unlimited amount of color choices. However getting to say that you have a one of a kind countertop that no one else possibly has in the world would be neat. Here are pros and cons of having granite countertops.

Pros

  • Like previously stated, each slab of granite is a one of a kind of natural stone that can make any kitchen stunning. This is also a great material to use if you want to add value to your kitchen and home. Granite countertops can also contain pits and fissures, which may seem like a con, but these natural characteristics add to the beauty of the natural stone.
  • Granite is heat resistant, and while this is a good thing if you have to put a pot or pan down quickly, it is still recommended to use a hot pad or trivet. This ensures that the counter top will remain protected.
  • Because of its density, during normal use, granite countertops cannot be scratched and shouldn’t chip. Now if you repeatedly take a hammer to it, scratches and chips will form causing unwanted blemishes.
  • This type of stone is very easy to keep clean. All you need is some warm water and detergent and you will be good to go.

Cons

  • Just like the uniqueness is a pro, it can also be a con for those that prefer a more uniform look. There is no way to ensure that there is consistency in the slab, unless the slab itself looks consistent. You get what is available and that’s it.
  • Harsh chemicals that are sometimes used in the kitchen can permanently damage or stain the surface. So when you want to deep clean your kitchen, or even surrounding areas, be cautious where you are using those chemicals.
  • Make sure that the countertop you pick will be your forever countertop. An advantage of granite is its durability, but this comes at a cost. Granite is not easily replaced and can cause damage to the cabinets once removed.
