When you first contemplate remodeling your bathroom, redoing the tiles, adding a tub, and updating the toilet are just a few projects that come to mind. What kind or type of vanity is usually a questioned at the end of the project where you have to work around the rest of the features of the bathroom. This can lead to an awkward placement, poor design, or lack of storage causing your bathroom to suffer.

For your bathroom to look its best and be how you envision it, start with placement of your vanity. It must be accessible and not disrupt the flow of traffic. Blocking the bathroom door or shower door will also lead to functional problems. You also have to take into account the plumbing and where it is located. To install the vanity that you want, the plumbing may be moved which can be costly. Switching from a traditional floor-mounted to wall-mounted vanity can also lead to rerouting pipes and drains.

Keep in mind what type of materials you would like you vanity to be made of. It has to be able to withstand the bathroom environment. This environment is usually hot, humid and busy, so it must be durable. Wood veneers, laminates, and thermofoil are great choices that work well in this environment. It is easier to match tile, cabinetry, and color scheme to a countertop rather than trying to match a top to a particular tile. By selecting the countertop you want first, you wont have to compromise if you find the countertop is difficult or impossible to match.

What size should it be? It depends on each bathroom and the preference of the renovator. Having a large vanity in a small bathroom doesn’t make sense and can become an eyesore. The size of the vanity will also be affected by how much storage you require. If you don’t need much storage a smaller vanity can be used. Included in size is the height of the vanity. Consider who will be using the vanity. Too small or too tall of vanity can make using it awkward and frustrating.
