How to clean your granite or quartz countertop

One of the best perks of having a granite or quartz kitchen countertop is that it’s easy to keep clean. Because they’re made of stone and cut precisely to fit, they’re very smooth and durable. Since granite and quartz countertops aren’t damaged easily, they’ll look great for many years as long as you keep them clean.

Granite Countertops

You can clean your granite countertops with dish soap and warm water. Just a small amount of dish soap is usually enough. If you use a microfiber cloth to dry the granite after, it’ll reveal its natural shine. It’s best to refrain from using acidic solutions or anything that’s too rough since that could damage the sealer on your countertop.

If you have a tougher stain that won’t come out with dish soap, try using baking soda. Mix baking soda with water until it’s a thick gel and let it sit on the stain for a day. Then rinse off the baking soda mixture and try cleaning anything that remains with dish soap and water.

Quartz Countertops

Since they’re naturally stain-resistant, quartz countertops can often be kept clean by just regularly wiping the counters and cleaning up spills as soon as they happen. Beyond that, though, a mild solution of dish soap and warm water will do, just like with granite countertops. Make sure to not use anything too strong – bleach or general purpose heavy duty cleaning products should be avoided.

For more thorough cleaning, you can buy cleaning products that are specifically labeled as safe for quartz countertops. A glass cleaner is a viable alternative. Using a quartz cleaning product every month or two will keep your quartz in top shape. After applying it and letting it sit for 15 minutes use a non-abrasive kitchen sponge to remove it.

Further Maintenance

Granite should be resealed every year. The sealer helps by making the granite resistant to stains, so make sure to reseal your granite as needed. Quartz countertops are made with resin to make them naturally stain-resistant and don’t need to be sealed, so regular simple maintenance is all that’s needed.
