The essence of minimalism is all about clutter control, having a limited palette, clean furnishings, and spaciousness. Although most people associate minimalism with a more modern style and clean lines, any style can work with minimalism when you do it right.

How to Master Minimalism

Remove Excess Clutter

The first step to achieving a minimalist style is to remove any excess clutter from your home. It may be easier said than done, but it may be time to let go of the pieces you don’t truly need or love. Although it’s hard to let go of personal possessions, decide on what to keep and what to let go. Keep any clutter off of tables or countertops by giving everything a home and stowing away and small appliances.

Embrace a Muted Color Palette

Some of the more common paint choices in minimalism are white and muted tones of gray, beige, and cream. If you’re looking for an inexpensive way to change the look of your home, painting your walls with a muted palette and a matte finish is a great place to start.

By using the same palette for walls, window treatments, flooring, and decor can really give you a cohesive and tranquil style. Use a variety of textures to create more depth.

Choose Large Wall Decor

To keep a room from looking too busy, choose one larger picture or mirror to hang instead of hanging smaller bunches of items. Having a large mirror in the room will also help your room to appear larger and more spacious.

Avoid Overcrowding

Obviously less is more when it comes to achieving a minimalist style, so avoid overcrowding. Too many small pieces or bulky furniture should also be avoided. Decoration such as pillows, throws, and coffee table decor should be kept to a minimum.
