Here we are once again going over a major material when it comes to finishing your kitchen renovation, the countertops. Once this bad boy goes in, you know that the renovation will be wrapping up shortly. Then you step back and take in your new kitchen’s beauty. The stunning appliances, backsplash, cabinets, and countertops make the new room a piece of art, but how did you decide on what type of countertop to use with so many types? After much consideration, you conclude that your countertops will be either quartz or granite. So the research begins  to make the decision for the perfect countertop!  When researching It’s always best to look at both options as well as all the possible details.

Quartz

Quartz countertops are manufactured using crushed quartz and resin. The result? A beautiful countertop that is just as strong and durable as granite. This type of stone however is non-porous and requires virtually no maintenance. Now this doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t clean up a mess as quickly as possible, but a quick cleanup will make it look like it never happened.

For homeowners who like consistency, this is the countertop for you. This type of stone provides a uniform appearance, meaning it looks like natural stone but with a consistent pattern and color.

Sadly when installing these countertops, seams can be seen, but depending on what color you are choosing the seam can be less noticeable. Expect over time where direct sunlight hits the countertops to become discolored. This isn’t something that happens quickly and if you don’t have direct sunlight hitting the counters, then you will never run into this issue.

Granite

Oh granite! Granite is a 100% natural, non-human made stone that is a popular choice for homeowners, designers, and architects. These countertops are a natural product that is porous so a sealant is required to keep its beauty. Compared to quartz, granite is just as strong but because it is a natural stone, it can be chipped and broken if abused.

The appearance of granite is never uniform making each and every piece unique. For those that have to have consistency, this isn’t the stone for you. All slabs of granite are one of a kind, so when you walk into your home you will know that no one else will have the same countertops as you.  Because of the uniqueness, it is impossible to hide the seams in a granite counter.  When ordering, keep in mind that the piece that you are looking at will not be the exact stone you will receive. One of a kind can also be downside in this case.

When it comes to cost, know that granite is half the price of quartz. As you begin to make your decision about which coutertop to choose, keep in mind that even though granite is not as costly, you will have to maintain the sealant.
