The walls should be at least ½ inch thick to ensure sturdiness. As you’re searching for the perfect cabinets, keep in mind to check for a consistency of the finish. You’ll see that with lesser quality of cabinets, their finishes will be irregular from one cabinet box to the next. These cabinets can also come with an extension hardware to allows you to open the drawers all the way and open doors almost 180 degrees for easier access.

In an average sized kitchen, a good quality set of stock cabinets can cost around $8,000 to $10,000. This price is the price of the cabinet and the installation by a professional. If you wanted to go semi custom or full custom, the price increases drastically. There are lower cost alternatives such as an IKEA set, that is still great quality for as low as $2,500. But you will be offsetting cost with the hassle of difficult assembly and installation.

There are some drawbacks of using stock cabinets. Unfortunately the finishes and color choices are limited. Most options are painted white, natural wood, or stained maple and cherry. These cabinets usually come in only one size unless you get semi custom. You also can lose valuable storage space. If the cabinets don’t quite fit, filler strips are used to close and cover the gaps. These fillers aren’t seen in custom cabinets where they have the ability to measure and take advantage of all the space.
