If you’ve never planned a remodel or built a home, choosing kitchen cabinets can seem like an overwhelming task. Above and beyond fit, there are many variations that one must factor into their final decision. In this article, we’ll help break down what to look for and consider when purchasing kitchen cabinets. Of course, kitchen cabinets are subject to design trends, just like anything else, so you’ll have to use your judgement in the end. But there are some key features to look out for that should remain evident in cabinets through the ages.

Construction Material

Wood continues to be the choice material of many cabinet manufacturers, but it’s important to note that it is not the only option. Other materials such as metal, steel and melamine are available if your application calls for them. This is one category that design trends as well as budget can dictate.

Door Style

Not all cabinets are designed equally, and the multitude of door styles on the market is evidence of that. Design in door styles will typically dictate cost, but there are styles available ranging from the ultra modern to the most conservative. Colors and finishes are also items to consider when choosing a door style for your kitchen cabinet project.

Door Mounting

The most common type of door mounting option is the regular overlay. In this format, the door partially overlaps the face of the cabinet while still allowing a small amount of the cabinet face to be visible. Another popular option is full overlay in which the cabinet door completely covers the face of the cabinets. This is typically seen in more modern, contemporary installations. A much less common door mounting option is the inset mount. This type of mount places the cabinet door flush with the face of the cabinet.

Hardware

Quite possibly the simplest yet most influential part of kitchen cabinetry is the hardware. The hardware you choose for your cabinets can completely change the style of your kitchen. Thousands of options exist ranging from modern to country to traditional, so it’s nearly guaranteed that you can find something that will fit your taste and style.
